Elastic Properties of Silica Polymorphs – a Review

چکیده

The elastic properties of silica phases are reviewed. Available monocrystal data for crystalline SiO2 polymorphs (low-quartz, high-quartz, low-cristobalite, high-cristobalite, stishovite) are collected from the literature, and effective elastic constants (Young’s moduli, shear moduli, bulk moduli and Poisson ratios) are calculated from these using Voigt-Reuss-Hill averaging. Both experimental data and simulation results are taken into account. A table of room temperature elastic constants for crystalline silica polymorphs and silica glass is given that lists the recommended current “state-of-the-art“ values. All data are consistent with the well-known auxetic behavior of cristobalite at room temperature, and high-temperature simulation data published for cristobalite confirm auxetic behavior for all temperatures from room temperature up to more than 1500°C. The calculations of this paper show that also quartz can be auxetic, but only in a very limited temperature range around the low-to-high-quartz transition temperature (420 – 577°C). Experimental measurements of elastic properties of tridymite and cristobalite, including high-temperature measurements, are identified as a desideratum of future research.

Systematic investigation of the mechanical properties of pure silica zeolites: stiffness, anisotropy, and negative linear compressibility.

While the energetic stability of the large number of possible SiO2 polymorphs has been widely addressed by both experimental and theoretical studies, there is a real dearth of information on their mechanical properties. We performed a systematic study of the elastic properties of 121 pure silica zeolites, including both experimentally synthesized and hypothetical structures, by means of density...

Thermodynamics and kinetics of silica scaling

Silica scaling is probably the principal factor limiting the extraction of energy from high temperature geothermal systems. Silica exists in a number of polymorphs from quartz through to opal A (or amorphous silica). The thermodynamics of the solubility of quartz and amorphous silica with variations in temperature, salt content, pH and pressure are discussed. However, in silica saturated geothe...

Issues and controversy: the measurement of crystalline silica; review papers on analytical methods.

This article reviews the analytical methods for crystalline silica polymorphs and summarizes promising techniques for compliance with health-related regulations. X-ray diffraction analysis appears to be the most promising method of determining quartz and cristobalite content at this threshold in many bulk mineral and chemical systems. Other analytical techniques can be used in some mineral and ...

High temperature elastic anisotropy of the perovskite and post- perovskite polymorphs of Al2O3

[1] Finite temperature ab initio molecular dynamics calculations were performed to determine the high temperature elastic and seismic properties of the perovskite and post-perovskite phases of pure endmember Al2O3. The post-perovskite phase exhibits very large degrees of shear-wave splitting. The incorporation of a few mole percent of Al2O3 into MgSiO3 is predicted to have little effect on the ...

Normal mode approach for predicting the mechanical properties of solids from first principles: Application to compressibility and thermal expansion of zeolites

We present a method for analyzing the mechanical properties of solids, based on normal modes and their coupling to lattice strains. This method was used to study elastic compression and thermal expansion of zeolites, with parameters calculated from density functional theory. We find in general that the bulk modulus can be divided into two contributions: a positive term arising from compression ...
